Summer Reading

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Manassas Park City Schools' librarians and teachers have developed suggested summer reading lists to help parents and students select great books.  Lists are available at schools, local public libraries, area bookstores, and on the Manassas Park City Schools website.

Many of the books on these lists have won awards from the American Library Association. For the coming school year, our schools will again participate in The Virginia Readers' Choice program.  This exciting program encourages youngsters to read and vote on their favorite books in the spring.  Titles are chosen for their quality, level, and appeal to students.  These books are highlighted on each school's reading list.  Students can begin reading this summer and continue through the school year.  At Cougar Elementary School, the librarian will read and discuss these books with students.

Children should select books at their independent reading level.  This is the level that students are able to read easily and understand.  Students will make steady progress by reading a variety of titles at this level.  They will become more confident in their reading abilities as they choose and read books that are "just right" for them.

Parents and family members should read to younger children.  Children learn how print works and begin to recognize words when the stories are repeatedly read.  You can help your child become interested in books and stories through discussion.  Chat about your child's favorite characters or the book's lesson or theme.  These conversations will help your child develop a deep appreciation for literature while strengthening family ties.

Listening to a good story is a wonderful activity for all ages.  Listening comprehension is especially important as students' progress through the grades.  Most children can listen and understand books at higher levels than they can read.  Remember to bring some books on tape for long car trips, so that the family can enjoy hearing a "good read."

Visiting our local libraries is a wonderful way to keep cool and relax during the summer.  Prince William County Public Libraries have incentive programs and interesting educational programs that encourage reading. Local book stores and children's book publishers also have summer reading programs.

It is important for students to keep reading throughout the summer.  Reading can help students learn about the world, stretch imaginations, and build vocabulary.  Our goal is to have students enjoy reading over the summer!

Happy Reading!
