As we approach the holiday season, we consider what we’re thankful for. While some are fortunate to have a roof over our heads and food on our tables, there are those of us who struggle to meet these needs. Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week occurs November 16-22, and it is designed to educate, draw attention to the problems of poverty, and spread awareness about local resources for those in need.

If you need assistance or are looking to get involved in helping families in your community, check out the resources below.

Capital Area Food Bank Resources Available

October 30, 2025

The Capital Area Food Bank (CAFB) provided MPCS with additional resources available to our community. Please review the PDFs below for more information regarding CAFB’s “Mobile Market” and “Community Marketplace”.

CAFB Flyers.pdf

CAFB's "Mobile Market" distributions are day of, produce focused, pop-up style distributions held at community locations across the DMV.  These are low-barrier distributions and do not require any ID or proof of income, status, or need. CAFB's "Community Marketplace" distributions are held every Saturday morning at a different location across the DMV and run by CAFB staff and volunteers. These are also pop-up style distributions similar to a Mobile Market and are low barrier. All are welcome.

This link  will direct you to CAFB's "Get Help" map. This map allows you to enter any address or zip code and set a radius of your choosing. From there, a list of food access points within that radius will appear. You can learn more about each location by clicking on the location. It is highly suggested to call ahead using the number provided for a given location, to ensure the partner's hour are accurate.

Mini Cougars, Big Achievements: MPCS Pre-K Programs Recognized!

October 20, 2025

The Virginia Preschool Initiative (VPI) and Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) programs at Cougar Elementary in Manassas Park Public Schools (MPCS) have once again been recognized for their outstanding quality in early childhood education.

According to the Virginia Department of Education’s (VDOE) 2024–2025 VQB5 Quality Profile, both programs met expectations, reflecting the strong instruction, collaboration, and nurturing atmosphere that define the division’s Pre-K classrooms. Notably, the programs saw a 15-point increase in their rating compared to the 2023–2024 school year.

The continued success of the MCPS Pre-K program highlights the division’s effective instructional leadership and the unwavering commitment of teachers, classroom assistants, and support staff, who cultivate caring, engaging, and inclusive early learning environments. Working together, they ensure that Manassas Park’s Mini Cougars begin their educational journeys with confidence, curiosity, and a lifelong love of learning.

The VQB5 system assesses how early childhood programs implement curriculum and interactions to foster meaningful learning experiences. Families can now explore the results for more than 3,200 publicly funded early childhood sites across Virginia on the VDOE’s VQB5 Quality Profile website: https://earlychildhoodquality.doe.virginia.gov/
